Alexander Technique is an education, not a treatment. As a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, I am trained to make an individual analysis of each student‘s movement patterns and help the student become aware of poor habits that affect their postural tone and neuromuscular coordination. Using gentle hands-on and verbal instruction, I help the student to free their neck, elongate their spine and reduce muscle tension. I teach each student how to use their thoughts as a way to reduce muscle tension and attain a new alignment of their head, neck and spine.
Each student is taught basic anatomy so that they correctly “map“ their body and move it in accordance with the correct anatomical function. Each student is taught “constructive conscious control “, so they begin to use conscious intention to change poor habits of movement and posture. (See section entitled “About the Alexander Technique.“)
During the lessons, I will take the student through simple activities such as sitting and walking. We will explore movement in other activities of daily living that are important to the student. For example, many students ask to explore ways to work at the computer, play an instrument, garden or improve their sport. Others have issues with pain. In addition to upright work, the lessons include gentle manipulation while on a table. On the table, one can experience lengthening of the spine and freeing of muscle tension without having to worry about gravity or balance. A table lesson is also a good time to focus on one ‘s breathing patterns while allowing oneself to do less.
The Alexander Technique has application to all movement. As an added bonus, the softening of muscle tension and improved skeletal alignment improves appearance. It is a beauty secret. In short, the Alexander Technique can help anyone improve their life.
How many lessons one needs varies with the individual and depends on your background and what you want from the work. Generally, one achieves a noticeable change in 8-10 lessons.
One should wear loose comfortable clothing during a lesson. The lesson is done fully dressed, however, shoes may be removed during a table lesson. Women may prefer to wear pants rather than a skirts during a table lesson.
I charge $50.00 per one hour lesson. For a series of 5 lessons, the charge is $225.00. There is a $30.00 surcharge to provide an on-site lesson. I also provide semi-private lessons, group lessons and corporate presentations.
See my Calendar of Events/Workshops page for my next group class or workshop.
